I'm only about 60 or so pages into it, but it seems to be a kind …Just a samurai/ninja story that isn't afraid to embrace fantasy. There is also now a prequel series, the Emperor of the Eight Islands, which is a quartet that takes place in the history of that world. The style is a bit different, more of an epic fable or saga.
